In a bid to enhance hands-on skills and workplace experience for its trainees, the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) has launched a new campaign, "VETA with Fundi Mahiri." The campaign aims to engage master crafts (Fundi Mahiri) in mentoring vocational trainees, providing them with practical skills, exposure to real-world workplace environments, and the confidence needed to excel in their respective occupations.
The agreement signed
on 1st October 2024 and witnessed by VETA Director General, CPA Anthony Kasore,
marks the beginning of a collaboration between the VETA-owned Iringa Regional
Vocational Training and Service Centre and two prominent companies in Iringa
Municipality.
The agreement was signed by Pasien Nyoni, Principal of the Iringa Regional Vocational Training and Service Centre with the master crafts Mohamed Anuarsadat, an automotive expert from Wheelerz company, and David Kalinga, owner of a Fitter Mechanics workshop in Iringa municipality.
Speaking at the event, CPA Kasore emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, "This collaboration is a strategic move by VETA to bridge the gap between skills attain in our institutional training and practical skills in the workplace.
The involvement of master crafts will allow our trainees to gain firsthand experience from seasoned professionals, learning not only the technical aspects of their trade but also the workplace culture and ethics that are crucial for their success.
He said this initiative will not only benefit VETA trainees but also help in building a more competent and confident workforce that can meet the demands of the industry.
CPA Kasore further
explained that the decision to initiate the "VETA with Fundi Mahiri"
programme was driven by the need to address the skills gap that exists among
young graduates, especially the practical exposure required to thrive in the
today’s competitive job market.
“By partnering with experienced master crafts, we are ensuring that our trainees receive the mentorship and hands-on training they need to excel in their chosen professions," he said.
CPA Kasore said, in addition to the collaboration in Iringa, VETA has announced plans to roll out the "VETA with Fundi Mahiri" programu across various VETA-owned training centers nationwide to ensure that vocational trainees in different parts of the country benefit from the expertise of master crafts.
He said, the goal was to create a sustainable network of professionals who can mentor and guide trainees, ultimately enhancing the quality of vocational education and training.
"VETA is committed to ensuring that this program reaches as many young people as possible. We understand that practical training is essential in bridging the skills gap in the job market, and we aim to replicate the success of the Iringa partnership in other centres across the country. This will allow more trainees to gain real-world experience and build confidence in their abilities, regardless of their location," CPA Kasore stated.
The master crafts, too, expressed their enthusiasm for the collaboration. Mohamed Anuarsadat, an automotive expert with years of experience, highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent.
" Wheelerz company and VETA bilateral relationship in Iringa, stipulates the society to a new world of scientific fractures in machines and equipments. These trainees are the future of our industry, and it’s our responsibility to pass on the skills and knowledge that will help them succeed. I look forward to working with them and watching them grow into skilled professionals," he said.
David Kalinga echoed these sentiments. "This initiative will not only help the trainees but also improve the overall quality of the workforce in our community. By sharing our expertise, we are contributing to the development of skilled professionals who will drive the growth of our industries," he said.
The collaboration
between VETA and the master crafts is expected to create a more robust training
environment, with trainees gaining real-world experience and learning from
industry experts. The initiative is part of VETA’s broader strategy to enhance
vocational education and training across the country, equipping young
Tanzanians with the skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship.
