Develop innovative behaviour to thrive in the labour market, Eng. Manyanya urges VET trainees.

Deputy Minister for Education, Science and Technology Hon. Engineer Stella Manyanya has urged trainees of vocational training to build a culture of constantly looking at challenges existing in the society and think of innovate way of solving them by using their vocational skills.

The Deputy Minister Manyanya made the statement when speaking to trainees of the VETA Kipawa Institute of ICT during her visit to the Institute on Monday, 14th November, 2016.

She said, upon graduating in their occupations, the main factor that will determine their success in the field is becoming innovative and problem-solving oriented.

“People out there have different challenges and need innovative ideas and creativity from skilled people to address their challenges,” she said.

Speaking about access to support for their self-employment, she advised them to form occupational groups for easy access to financial and technical support to run their businesses.

Also, she advised the trainees with interest of career progression to spend some years of practicing their skills in the field and increase their competence before they go for higher levels of training.

“I think career progression in technical training should be competence-based rather than knowledge-based. People should be measured by competences in their occupations after a period of practice in the field, and then given a chance to progress,” she added.

On the other hand, the trainees thanked the Deputy Minister for visiting the centre and encouraging them.

They assured her that the training they are getting at the centre are quite useful and are imparting them with skills, which they have already started to utilize in fixing some problems in their communities.
