Tanzanian youth shine in international VET examinations

Recently released examination results of the City and Guilds of the UK indicate that majority of trainees under the Enhancing Employability through Vocational Training (EEVT) project implemented in Lindi and Mtwara have passed examinations for international certification in vocational training.

The EEVT project implemented in collaboration between VETA, VSO and BG/LNG aims at improving the employability of young people in Mtwara and Lindi regions in Southern Tanzania, with a focus on the growing demand for skilled labour in the gas industry and related services due to the increase in exploration activities by various gas companies. City & Guilds assists the project towards international certifications with its examinations being part of monitoring tool to assess if the trainees could qualify for international certification hence suggesting that they have international standards.

In December 2015, trainees from the centres of VETA Lindi and VETA Mtwara set for different City and Guilds examinations in the trades of carpentry, welding and fabrication, motor vehicle mechanics, plumbing, and electrical installation. City & Guilds of the UK is a global leader in skills development institution, providing services to training providers, employers, and trainees across a variety of sectors to meet the needs of today’s workplace. Its qualifications are valued by employers across the world.

Results of the examinations, as released on Friday, January 22, 2016 indicate that out of 76 trainees who set for the examinations in Mtwara, 67 passed, equivalent to 88.15%. In Lindi 46 (85.18%) out of 54 trainees who set for the exams passed.

Trainees’ overall performance for 2015 exams increased by 10% compared to last year as the pass rate for 2015 was 86.92% while in 2014 was 76.92%.

“There is a big improvement considering that some trainees in both Mtwara and Lindi did both written and online exams which provide more assurance of quality control,” says Mawazo Mataje, EEVT Project Manager.

Trainees under electrical installation trade performed best with many “distinction” scores, which is the highest score under C&G. Trades which followed in good performance were motor vehicle mechanics, plumbing, and welding and fabrication. On the other hand, carpentry was the least in performance as out of the 12 trainees who set for the carpentry exams from the two centres of VETA Lindi and VETA Mtwara, only 2 passed.
On her side, Rose Tesha, VSO Programme Manager for Secure Livelihoods said, it is real good to acknowledge the devotion, commitment and dedication from management, teachers and advisors and the fact that more focus was placed towards practical training, industrial exposure all this build up to this success.

Jean Van Wetter VSO Country Director summarizes said, it is all about public, private partnership (PPP). This joint efforts bring big result and great impact.

In the EEVT project, VETA are the main implementers of the project through their training centres, VSO the coordinator of the project and the BG Tanzania/LNG the funder of the project.

In the short term, the project is expected to reach 24 VETA teachers through receipt of daily support on the job by VSO tutors; 11 VETA teachers through receipt of several City & Guilds trainings and exams to obtain City & Guilds certificates; 620 VETA students expected to benefit from an improved education environment, the presence of VSO tutors, and certified VETA teachers 280 VETA students to access employment after graduation.

In the long run, the accredited VETA teachers will cascade their skills to in-coming VETA staff, enabling VETA South East Zone to produce a steady stream of qualified craftsmen and teachers. This way, VETA is creating mutual benefits for the local community of Mtwara and for the industry. Six specialty trades are covered by the project including Food Preparation; Plumbing & Pipe Fitting; Welding & Fabrication; Carpentry & Joinery; Motor Vehicle Mechanics; Electrical Installation.  Also, generic skills, including English language, Health & Safety, Maintenance and Entrepreneurship.
