The VETA owned
Kagera Vocational Training Centre has received USD 16,343.90 grant from the
Skills Development Fund (SDF) for a 9-month project whose purpose is to introduce
training in fish farming through cage system and fish processing and
perseveration through improved kiln smoking technology.
The Project
Coordinator, Juliana Magesa says that the project is expected to directly
benefit 150 people, particularly youth through three batches of three-month
courses each enrolling a maximum of 50 trainees.
She says
preparations are underway with training packages already developed and the
centre in consultation with local government authorities is in the process of
identification of trainees from entrepreneurial groups in the region, ready for
commencement of the first batch in December, 2018.
She says that
the main target group of the training is youth as the focus is enhancing youth
employment and reduction of poverty.
Explaining
about the plan, the Principal of VETA Kagera, Baluhi Mitinje says that his
centre has decided to take advantage of the potentiality owing to the fact that
a great part of the Kagera region population resides along Lake Victoria and
their economic activities are on fisheries including fishing, processing and
merchandising as an opportunity for skills training.
He said that
people in the region and nearby regions including Mwanza and Mara require skills
enhancement to improve their fisheries engagement and therefore the centre will
train them in both fish rearing and fish processing.
Kagera VTC was
established in 1987 with enrolment capacity of 120 trainees in the trades of
Carpentry and Joinery; Masonry and Bricklaying; Tailoring and Welding and Metal
Fabrication. Currently, the centre has an annual enrolment of 300 trainees for
long courses and more than 800 trainees for short courses in six trades of
Motor Vehicle Mechanics; Electrical Installation; Carpentry and Joinery;
Masonry and Bricklaying; Tailoring and Welding and Metal Fabrication.
